This fund basically has no limitation on what kind of resources and company to invest in.  It can invest in a wide range of types of companies such as resource discovering, extraction, distribution company or even their service providers.  This fund also has no limitation on the type of resources (mineral, oil, water, matel, renewable energyetc), so the fund manager has more flexibility to choose a better stock.

Natural resources is a hit market now and you benefit from the uptrend now with a good profit, however, the risk is high since you should know commerical goods' price always jump up and down real quick.  To catch the low price is not easy.

On the other hand, there are also some potential markets which can provide good return in the near future.  For example Developed Europe, Asian Property and Latin America.  Therefore, if you have 300k, I would suggest to use maybe 2/3 of your capital to buy the direct fund (perhaps the First State Fund you mentioned), and set up a portfolio using monthly investment which is lower risk.  SO you can keep your cash flow and enjoy the short term uptrend of the natural resources' price to maximize the profit.  On the  other hand you can aenjoy the potential of other markets to balance your risk.

This is just my suggestion because I work in the industry, so if you need more information about the funds or the benefit of monthly investment, you can PM me

I find the ABN AMRO Russian fund should be interesting. The PE of Russian market is only 11-12, unlike the China (50 - 60) or Vietnam ( > 80 ?). And it is even cheaper than HK.

There is another ETF 2831. The transaction cost is cheap as it is only a stock. But the volumn is very thin so the dealer can mark up an unreasonable price.

Buy fm the banks. But not many banks are dealing with ABN AMRO funds. Or, u can seach the moringstar if there is any single country Russian fund, otherwise need to buy Eastern Europe as a basket. All of them are not cheap in price and nearly touching the peak. But they are still cheap in term of PE.

There is no cheap fund la, only fund with low PE.

The bubble does not want to burst (as yet)!

Why you like bonds?:o:wondering::soldier::reading:

The emerging market bond I am looking for has around 18% growth in the past 3 yrs on average. Not bad at all. Also, it is only one of the elements in my profolio to balance my other high risk funds, like energy, eastern europe, mining, Philippines etc, which have around 20% to 160% growth already.

Who know what will happen for the market tomorrow as I don't have any crystal ball to see thru the future? One should not put all the eggs into 1 basket.

depending on your purpose of investing in this fund, if it is for short term trading, you just hope it will perform the way you wish.  But if it's for longer term investments, unless you are trying to diversify your portfolio, why put everything into one basket?

b4321 2007-6-12 12:59

Funds are for medium to long term investment, becoz the transaction cost is high and turn-around time is low. For certain funds like bond funds, usually the dividend will be distributed either quarterly, half-yearly or yearly. So, don't expect u will gain anything in 1-2 month.

I am holding 95% of my fund for 1.5 to 2.5 years. And if the prospect is good, I don't mind holding them for 5 years or more.

My short-term tools: hot shares, warrants, futures, and FOREX.

Medium to long-term tools: Daily Accural, equity links, funds, commercial properties, bonds, structured notes, and good shares.

Daily accural is good and return is higher than equity links and good if the market is flat.

Amg the abv, commercial properties give me the most return in term of money.
