因此村落名香埗頭。

[font=標楷體]道光十九年[/font](1839年[font=標楷體])五月二十七日，在九龍尖沙嘴地方，有英國水手五人[/font]在村內醉酒鬧事[font=標楷體]，和地方百姓發生衝突，酒醉行兇，將村民林維喜棍毆重傷，翌日死亡。[u]林則徐[/u]深感憤怒，要英人交出兇手，[u]義律[/u]拒絕[/font]。林維喜案成為鴉片戰爭的導火線。
這處原有兩個平行的海角：九龍角和黑頭角 （本地華人則稱該處為大包米，據因山形似一包放在地上的大米。 後期普遍都叫作訊號山）。兩個海角之間還有一個小海灣。日後的火車站地段就是將這兩點間的海灣填平而來。經過多次填海工程後，原有海岸線己很難辨認。

黑頭角， 真真正正的尖東[/url]
黑頭角處九龍南端的高地， 天文台於一九零七年在山上築了一座紅磚的訊號塔，負責向港內船隻報時及通報風訊 。
明清時代， 尖沙咀與中環間的海稱中門 （介乎汲水門和鯉魚門之間的意思）是橫渡維港的最短海程。早於1888年己有天星渡輪在此往還港島與九龍。尖沙咀藉以逐漸繁榮起來。

現今所見的尖沙咀漆咸道及梳士巴利道是當年興建九廣鐵路時的填海用地，而填海用的沙泥，正是由劈鑿當時分隔油麻地和尖沙咀之間的一座小山（官涌山）而來 。

尖沙咀火車站於1913年動工。由於第一次世界大戰，影響從英國運來所需物料，車站內部工程一度需要暫停。鐘樓作為火車站的一部分，於1915年完工，而整個車站則於1916年3月28日竣工。
當年，尖沙咀火車總站使香港可由該鐵路連接粵漢, 京漢線,再通往西伯利亞。是歐亞火車線的東方終站，因此極具歷史價值。

尖沙咀鐘樓[/url]
20世紀初， 城市大多建有鐘樓。 當時手錶尚未普遍， 故此在公眾地方， 政府機關， 教堂都有鐘樓向大眾報時。九龍火車總站亦不例外。
九廣鐵路鐘樓高44米，樓頂備有一支7米長的避雷針。鐘樓主體部分由紅磚砌成，四角嵌有花崗石。
尖沙咀火車總站鐘樓於1915年落成，由於第一次世界大戰， 零件運港遇到困難。當時鐘樓只有向維港的一面有鐘，而且是暫時裝上由畢打街鐘樓折卸下來的鐘。

鐘樓內重達一噸的報時大銅鐘和四面的鐘在1920年才開始安裝，並在1921年3月開始運作。才成為名副其實的鐘樓。 當時洪亮的鐘聲可響徹整個海港，也成為了維港的標誌之一。

不過，其後工程師發現一個重要問題：鐘樓報時不準確。1950年，鐵路局已想不出維修辦法，只好嘗試拆下報時的大銅鐘。鐘樓停止了報時鐘聲。

銅鐘移走後另一問題又出現。四面鐘的報時始終不一樣，結果要勞煩鐵路局的學徒，每天跟師傅由車廠乘貨運列車至尖沙嘴，逐一調校四面鐘後，再返回車廠工作。
1975年車站清折時，大銅鐘曾被放置在九龍紅磡車站後轉至沙田車站，現則置九鐵火炭總部的何東樓。特區政府目前正研究將大銅鐘重新裝上鐘樓的可能性，以使『維港鐘聲』重現昔日風采。

九廣鐵路火車站於1975年遷往現時位於紅磡的九龍火車總站現址，尖沙咀的舊火車大樓則於1978年拆卸，鐘樓則保留作歷史標記，並成為尖沙咀區的標誌。並於1990年由古物諮詢委員會評定為「一級歷史建築」的法定古蹟。

1997年特區政府成立後，特地在康樂文化署成立了一個古物古跡辦事處，專門負責全港文物古跡的保護工作。去年特區政府又專門撥款70萬港元，對鐘樓進行全面清洗和維護。鐘樓的外牆只是用清水進行去污處理，旨在保持鐘樓本色；而鐘樓內部牆面則用特定的塗料進行粉刷，樓梯及扶手不作任何改變，包括鐘樓四面報時鐘的鍾面顏色也不作任何加工，完全保持原貌。香港特區政府其其後完成全面清洗和維護工作。鐘樓曾對外開放後，遊客可登上鐘樓頂上的平臺，透過精緻的菱形窗戶，飽覽維多利亞港灣絢麗的風光，緬懷昔日火車站的輝煌歷史。

在原址興建的香港太空館和香港文化中心，再加上後來的藝術館，這一帶已然成為香港的文化重鎮。鐘樓仍然是尖沙咀的地標。
尖沙咀的代表建築物「鐘樓」，蠻有特殊的風情，尤其環繞在側的都是代表現代香港的時尚、進步與璀璨，而鐘樓卻像一個矗立在維港旁的老者。
