Mainland University Student English Skill

I interviewed a female student from Guangzhou recently. Her English is so good that I was so impressed. Unfortunately I did not hire her because the job is in Shenzhen, she has not finished her school yet.

She home town is in Liaoning. Wonder how she could practice her English.

manho123 2007-10-30 00:49

student from China is very hardworking

princess_f 2007-10-31 00:13

They are hardworking because of their background is quite harsh, they never had such a great chance for learning and earning money before. I appreciate their hardworking.
The crucial point for learning English is be surrounded by a pure English environment, this helps improving very much. However, if it is hard to achieve such environment, try read more Egnlish articles. Watching English news does help too, but remember to pay attention to the caption.

No surprise, friends! Don't think China is a closed country now. :lol If you go to some bookshops in most cities of China, you can see there are full of language learning medias: videos, tapes, CDs, etc. In daily living there are plenty English newspapers, magazines and even English TV programs and importantly, internet allows them to get access to many useful learning tools. There are also a lot of foreigners living in China. It¡¦s easy to make friends with them through various means such as doing language exchange or even paying some tuition fees for practice. Of course the most effective way is to have a native speaker as the boy friend or girl friend. :P So I think if one is really determined and does not live in very remote and poor villages. It's still possible to be competent in English.

Hi, I teach English in Shanghai so I am curious. When you say her English is good, do you mean fluency, comprehension, word usage, or maybe all of the above? I agree that mainland students "can" be incredibly hardworking, but for every one hardworker you'll also have 5 who just won't do anything. I only work with kids in the big city so this situation is likely very different in the countryside.

cherryc 2007-12-15 23:20

agree. met quite some mainland chinese people who really speak excellent english

langstaffboy 2007-12-18 07:59

masteqq 2008-1-2 21:07
