The photos can be enhanced.  I have take the liberty of doing some final touches on your first photo.  The result is:

Add more tone to the sky, and brighten up the foreground.

Welcome! That's more lovely.  I just posted the photo as it had been.  No touch-up work was done.  Perhaps if I'd brought my DSLR, the photo would be better
