You may consider Tamron 28-300mm (A06) cost around $2400 for shooting birds

For butterfly, you might need Macro lens.
You can choose Tamron 90mm Macro (172E) cost around $2700

The above lens are 100% new.  Buying 2nd hand lens need to be careful to avoid faulty lens.  My suggestion always consider alternative lens like Tamron or Sigma.  At least it give you warranty of their lens.

You can buy these lens from shops at Mong Kok.
They are located at "Sai Yeung Choi Street" and "Tung Choi Street".

Hope it helps.

小弟不健議用高倍數變焦鏡,
因變焦倍數越大,成像越差,
不如研究下  80-200 ,70-300或是100-400左右的鏡頭,
一般光圈會較大!

Normally, long zoom are quite expensive if you want good image quality.  Sigma APO 170-500mm is one of the cheapest way to get to 500mm.
But you need good Image quality and with your budget, I think the best bet will be the 70-200 f/4L.  One of the sharpest of Canon's zoom lens plus excellent build.  I bought a 70-200 f/4L IS and the images are great.  I will post the pictures on a saperate thread.

?? Or Sigma lens ?? Haven't heard of anything named as "little black" in Canon series!!

BTW, usnameless, is there a big difference between "little white" and "little little white"?

各位師兄留意,
dumpdump 希望找大約三千元以內 lens,
所以建議的時候也盡可能考慮在這個消費範圍內,
超過這個價錢範圍或者離題的建議可免則免。

Just to throw more things into this mix ....

If you are shooting wild life (such as birds or animals) then it is better off to get telephoto zoom (e.g. 70 - 200 mm or 70 - 300 mm).  Zoom lenses with focal lengths variation from wide angle to telephoto usually carry a penalty of image degradation as compared dedicated telephoto zoom or wide angle zoom.

You may also want to consider image stablisation as this technology reduces camera movement by up to 2 stops although these lenses tend to be expensive.

Hahaahahaha, welcome to try the poison of Lenses!!!!!!!

MovieMonster 2008-1-6 16:39

Lenses are worhtwhile investment if you intend to treat photography as a long term hobby/passion.  DSLR depreciate in values rapidly but not lenses, a good lens like Canon EF 70 - 300 mm USM IS would last you a while and will also fit new Canon DSLR.  Hence it iw worth to save a little longer to get a better quality lens .

I was in a similar situation - with a Canon EOS 400D and was considering Canon EF 70  - 300 mm (cheap but nasty) and EF 70 - 300 USM IS (decent quality but cost 3 times more - around HK$5300 ish).  I decided to get the better lens and the extra money spent is well worth it.  Check my posts on wild life and birds shots.  These JPGs are low resolution version for the web but the details of bird feathers can be seen even for JPGs that are 700K or so in sizes.  I had borrowed 70 - 300 mm for trial from a friend and was dissapointed with the results.
