大隻西兄的老襯亭應該是六十年代末或七十年代初興建的。我想牛奶蛇兄及mandy 兄想看前一代的照片。讓我找找看。

老襯亭是香港島扯旗山與歌賦山之間的爐峰峽上已拆卸的建築，即今日凌霄閣前身的別稱，曾是山頂纜車的終點站。最早期的老襯亭建於20世紀初，只是一個觀景亭（當地第一代建築），於香港日治時期被毀，後於1950年代由香港大酒店建成後來的建築物，作為山頂纜車山頂站的建築，仍被俗稱為老襯亭，此老襯亭當地為第二代建築。
1972年，建築物重建成上一代的爐峰塔（當地第三代建築），於8月29日正式開放，頂層設有西餐廳，餐廳下層為咖啡室，而底層則是中菜餐館。爐峰塔於1993年清拆，原址發展成今日的凌霄閣，此為當地第四代建築。

最右的應是山頂纜車站﹐在其左旁的單層建築應是老襯亭。有錯請指正。

現今人們稱山頂纜車站的位置為老襯亭﹐我認最早的老襯亭是指下圖那一個。真正在山頂之顛。

印象中, 我年少時的老襯亭狀似一個八角暸望亭, 四面通風, 有幾個投幣望遠鏡.wawa兄於 2008-3-16 23:46 發表的應該是了.

物有所值：山頂與纜車
十九世紀中期的太平山頂，只有數十戶外籍居民。他們的登山工具，只有轎子、肩輿和山兜，全部仰仗人力，轎夫則由二至四人不等。相傳曾有人養一駱駝以代步，但種種不便局限了山頂居民的人數。
1881年，有洋商向港府建議，籌辦由西環至筲箕灣的電車服務，並設有一登上太平山頂的支線。最後，只落實由花園道至山頂的登山電車計劃，於1888年通車，這是香港的第一種機動車輛，是由蒸汽發動者，到了1926年，才改為電力。有了登山電車（於 1960年代正名為纜車）後，山頂立即發展為高尚住宅區。
1904年，當局立例限制山頂區只供外籍人士居住。1947年，此限制才被撤消。
直至1960年代，纜車仍分有頭等和三等，而三等客則多為受僱於山頂住戶的傭工，約1970年，三等才被取消。
農曆新年，中秋節及重陽，大量市民登高上山頂。在戰前，纜車票價昂貴，大部分人都沿舊山頂道徒步登山，山頂滿佈人潮。在1920年代的報章，記載此種盛況，述及人潮川流不息，非法小販到處擺賣。不少人帶備自製的神像木偶，供迷信者參拜。一遇警察的追捕，則捧著神像落荒而逃，成為奇景。
最早的山頂觀景亭設於歌賦山附近，1950年代初則建於纜車站旁，被稱為「老襯亭」。現時所見者，已經歷兩次改建了。
早期的纜車車身結構為木料，到了1950年才改為全金屬者。1990年，再度換上二輛由瑞士製的新型雙卡纜車。
至於花園道的車站，亦由早期的簡陋木結構，經過一度改建，成為目前附有聖約翰大廈的新型建築物了。

A long procession of people is ascending the Peak, on Hong Kong Island. The hill on the left is Mount Austin and the path filled with people is leading up to Victoria Peak. It is the 9th Day of the 9th Moon, on the Double 9th, when all good Chinese believe they must visit high places. In South China it is combined with Chung Yeung, the Autumn Festival, when ancestral graves are visited, swept clean and offerings placed on them.

多謝指點。若 Mount Austin 不是 Victoria Peak, 它會是那處呢﹖下面是Wiki 的 Victoria Peak 的解釋﹐亦提到 Victoria Peak 即是 Mount Austin, 肯定令我更加混淆。

小時看到的報章文摘﹐老襯亭的名稱是由於有俗語”太平山上望落黎好多老襯“﹐和英文的”A Sucker is born every day" 的意思差不多。 亭在太平山上﹐所以就有老襯亭一詞。不過應有其他版本的解釋。

Mount Austin Barracks 並不在 Mount Austin 的頂峰﹐它是在 Mount Austin Road 的旁邊。 下兩圖有指明 Mount Austin Barracks 的位置。

Located on Mount Austin Road, the Peak, it was built in about 1890 and had offered its customers ''a separate Bath-Room.in every Bed-Room''-a rare convenience at that time. The venture was unsuccessful, and in 1897 the Hotel was sold to the Military Authorities and used as barracks for troops. The Hotel was destroyed during the 2nd World War and never rebuilt.
