For the good of the other party (your ex-gf or ex-bf), you should keep a distance from her/him to avoid embarassment or hurt feelings. You may know what you think but you don't know what the other party thinks. Ther may be hate, love or wanting to pick up again, etc. As long as the affair is over, better keep it in your heart and go forward. Don't become a burden of the other party.

I do agree that even when the love affair is over, she/he may still have a special place in your heart. For me, I always let my gfs/wife know about my ex-gfs, and they all use that to make fun of me. Nonetheless, I won't try to find out how they are doing and contact them as it may not do good to either them or me.
