1937年的南京，日軍殘暴，滿目瘡痍，但由國際友人主持的一個教堂暫時還是一方淨土。幾個神職人員收留了一群躲在教堂裡的金陵女大學生、13個躲避戰火的秦淮河上的風塵女子，以及6個從死人堆裡爬出來的國軍傷兵。共同面對有史以來最慘絕人寰的大屠殺的故事，結果竟然是那13個最“下賤”的女子成了保護眾人的英雄。在這個相對封閉的空間裡，他們共同面對有史以來最可怕、最沒有人性的屠殺，產生了各種各樣奇妙的感情。然而，教堂也不是永遠的淨土，日軍終於衝進了這裡。傷兵被殺，女大學生則眼看就要被日軍擄走凌辱。在這個時刻，這13個平日里被視為下賤的女子，在侵略者喪失人性的屠刀前，激發了俠義血性：她們身披唱詩袍，怀揣剪刀，代替教堂裡的女學生參加日本人的聖誕慶祝會，去赴一場悲壯的死亡之約。
