《赤焰戰場》改編自wildstorm/dc的同名漫畫。該漫畫共三冊，出版于2003年至2004年，由warren ellis編寫、cully hamner繪畫。故事講述弗蘭克、喬、馬文和維多利亞退休之前是cia高級特工，但是他們知道的那些秘密，讓他們成了cia頭號目標。某天，一個裝備精良的刺客竟然闖進弗蘭克的家，并意圖殺死他。決定不能坐以待斃的他，集結幾位老友先下手為強，他們穿越美國，來到cia總部，他們將揭開美國歷史上的一個大陰謀……

幕后制作
別具一格的硬派動作片
布魯斯·威利斯、摩根·弗里曼、海倫·米倫、約翰·馬爾科維奇，這樣一個三男一女的演技派陣容，當他們湊在一起的時候，很容易讓人以為又會是一部大賣內涵的劇情片。可這次情形不一樣，他們聚在一起拍攝的這部《赤焰戰場》，卻是一部不折不扣的動作片。究竟為什么會想到用這樣的老戲骨去拍一部動作片？對此，導演羅伯特·斯文克說道：“這部《赤焰戰場》用了一些非常有經驗的演員，很大程度上是因為劇情需要，因為故事描述的，正是一群退休年齡的特工如何因為很多危機而再次走到一起執行任務的故事。而出于故事里對這幾個角色的設定，我們一開始就準備用一些上了年紀的演員，而且我還有一個想法，就是要用一個看上去不可思議的陣容來打造這部電影。一開始我們最先接觸了梅麗爾·斯特里普，其實當我打算拍這部電影的時候，第一個想到的就是她，因為梅麗爾·斯特里普已經出演了各種不同類型的電影，但她拍過的動作片實在少之又少，如果能夠在2009年，讓她來拍攝一部火暴的動作片，我覺得會擦出非常美妙的火花。可惜實在太遺憾，這部電影的檔期沒法趕上她的時間，但我很慶幸的是，找到了一個同樣優秀的演員，彌補了這個遺憾，那就是海倫·米倫。”
