Do you have to join Big4?

Do you have to join Big4?

I worked as an accountant for 3 years

And someone told me that my career will be v. smooth if I go and work in the Big 4, i.e. be an auditor, then I can jump to anywhere I want - good salary...

Is what my friend says true? I mean, auditors when they come out they still have to start over again (unless they want to be stuck at auditing)

Also I am currently studying CPA, and everyone I know studies in CA in Big 4, which mean i might have to start over again in ca. Can someone pls advise me?

Thanks

Brother, be honest in recent days Big 4 was not so willing to employ non-fresh Grad. as audit trainee (as you mentioned that you have 3 years experience in accounting, I assume that you have no experience in audit field).
If you have a degree in accounting you may try to apply, but if you don't, I think it was much difficult to join Big 4 la.

Moreover, you said much people you know in Big 4 was studying CA, however, CA should be study and take examination in UK - that's why their called themselves "Charactered" - Charactered by the Queen!!!(expect for the one that introduce by HKICPA in order to replace its existing linkage with ACCA), so if those person you know was U-grad in local U, its seems that not so possible for them to take CA examination rather than taking QP.

Good luck.

It is absolutely unnecessary to go from an accountant to working in one of the big 4 firms.  For people who have never worked here will never understand how bad it is to work here.  They would call you whenever they need you, no matter where you are, what you are doing or even if you have already quitted the job for a month.  No one will care about you, your seniors will make you work as they are also made to work very hard...at the end, unless you want to get a taste of living without a life, you should not even consider moving into this industry.  Yes, most of us OT till 12 am or later, and most of the time having no more than 20% of our OT to claim.

You could be a star in a 10-people local firm and build a huge network through friends working in other firms and even friends of your colleagues if you are willing to make it.  On the other hand, you could leave the firm without any connection with other people if you are a quiet type of person.

nothing is guaranteed. 1kind is right in a sense that you can still succeed in a local firm. but chances are no high-profile corporate jobs are going to be interested in you. of course, if you have enough connections, you can always start your own firm
