JUST FOR LAUGHING

JUST FOR LAUGHING

Previously, few policemen could speak fluent and correct English, however, they were able to communicate with the expatriate officers.

Hereunder comes :

A traffic rank-and-file reported an incident to an inspector, saying, "Street Mouth, one car come, one car go: two cars Ping-ling Bum-lum."
"Yes No man die?"
"Yes, one man sleeping, no air."
"Understood."

Nowadays, most of the policemen speak fluent & correct English.

This is progress and is good for Hong Kong.

But we still lag behind Singapore and even India a lot in terms of conversational English ...

Few can remember this joke, but your first sentences seems to have missed out another phrase:

"Street Mouth, one car come, one car go: two cars Ping-ling Bum-lum, many ya ya ya."  ...

There are two consequences with and without " many ya ya ya" . Without these few words, the accident report may be shorter than that with them. The policeman writing the long report may also yell  ya ya ya, too !

Well, the version I heard long time ago was something like this:

Inspector: "Constable, what happened?"

PC: "Sir, one car come, one car go, two cars kissing bum bum bum!  One man died.  One man ngai ya ya..."

Hi Brother Qwerty

Welcome to join in.

I'm sure "JUST FOR LAUGHS" is correct.  From our experience + knowledge we are aware that "proper Usage" is as important as "grammar".   "proper usage" means "general usage / commonly used style".  In this case we must say " Just for Laughs ".  Same for " Just for Fun / Just for the Fun of it ", which is normally used as a "Heading".

Anyway, "Just for Laughing" is "improper usage", although grammatically correct.
One example : "Wish You a Happy New Year" / "Wishing You a Happy New Year" / "Wish You Have a Happy New Year
-- which is "proper usage"?

Answer : "Wishing You a Happy New Year" is the only acceptable / proper phrase.  Others?  Improper, although often seen in everyday writings.

I emphasize : "Just for Laughs" is correct.
"Just for Laughing" is inproperly used.

When i typed out "Just for laughing" the other day, I knew it was incorrect, nevertheless, i had no intention to correct it as I was in the state of "看山還是山 看水還是水".

I 'd like to put your comment  this way: "Just a point to note : The correct usage is "Just for Laughs".  I only corrected this because this is after all an
English Learning Forum. "
