訓導 and English are not higly related, you cannot expect the Chinese/other subjects  teacher must be good in English. Besides, ability in English is not a indicator or knowledge.

回復 #1 abcd_efg 的帖子

This may not be a fair accusation. If the media of instruction in that particular primary school is not English, then it is definitely not necessarily for every individual teacher to be proficient in English.

The fact that there appeared to be a communication problem between that teacher and a Filipino household helper did not automatically mean that the education level of the teacher is not up to the required standard. Fluent oral English does not equal to educational standard. Besides, some of the Filipino household helpers' spoken English are not that easy to understand.

Of course, I do not know that school nor that teacher. I am not a teacher and I am a parent myself. My opinion is not meant to be offensive. All I want to express is that it is not fair to jump to the conclusion immediately that the teacher is not qualified.

A teacher needs to be a degree holder along with having passed thu education training. After having been educated for being a teacher for years, if a teacher do not speak English coz he is not teaching English. Do you accept that a teacher is an illiterate given that he is not teaching language?

No mercy to unqualified teacher any more.

Do you accept that a teacher is an illiterate given that he is not teaching language?
As the question seemed to be addressed to me, I am obliged to reiterate my opinion once more.

Perhaps it's due to my illiteracy, I might have misled you to believe that I do accept illiterate and unqualified teachers. Definitely it was not my intention. I do not think our society should tolerate "unqualified", "illiterate", "lazy", or "irresponsible" teachers. On the other hand, our society should be responsible and careful enough to avoid the kind of casual unjustified accusations.

I simply cannot agree with the conclusion that a primary school teacher is “illiterate” and “unqualified” just because there appeared to be a kind of communication difficulty between that teacher and a Filipino maid.

It is my opinion that :
1.        It is not mandatory for a teacher of a Chinese primary school to be proficient in spoken English.

2.        One should not casually jump to the conclusion that the teacher was weak in English proficiency because there appeared to be some sort of communication problem between the teacher and a Filipino maid. This should not be considered as very unusual as both parties were non-native English speakers. Even in Britain, some very well educated English people may have difficulty to understand their fellow countrymen’s spoken English with strong accents (Yorkshire accent, Black country accent, Cockney accent, Scottish accent, etc)

3.        A teacher is supposed to be well educated. Nevertheless, education is not the equivalence of English proficiency. Even if a primary school teacher is not proficient in written and spoken English, he/she does not deserved to be called an “illiterate”. Similarly, some Filipino household helpers are also very well educated, however, they speak English with a very strong Filipino accent  which prevents people to understand them comfortably in the first instance. They are definitely not deserved to be called “illiterate”.

4.        On the other hand, a person who is fluent in spoken English is not necessarily an educated person.

I may not be literate enough to understand your point, so please forgive me if I misinterpret.

brat, i hope i'm not mistaking due to your last sentence, but this is a Hong Kong that has been returned to China.  albeit English is an important international communication language, shouldn't the focus be on how competent these teachers are in Chinese(both cantonese and mandarin) rather than an expat language?

imho, i'd much rather jump on, if there are any, ABC teachers who aren't fluent in any form of Chinese, teaching in any school in Hong Kong.  with no regards to politics, a majority of this city's citizens are chinese, and chinese should be the mandatory language, not english.

similar to what saimei1962 said, maids of south asian descent often have a very different accent than ours, for example, many filipinos speak tagalog, and their english reflects that(not to mention some spanish, portuguese, and US english subtleties).  it'd be hard pressed to find any english teacher in the world that can understand all english accents.

and perhaps a little nationalistic, but it's about time all those non-chinese speakers living in HK start learning some chinese, instead of us having to compensate for their laziness.  i don't see vancouver public schools with over 60% chinese students forcing their anglophone teachers to have to be competent in chinese to teach english-taught subjects, nor their counsellor.
