It may be true, but if you only make friends only to build your fame and fortune, it is like you only get married to a partner that is richer or better-off than you.
Personally, I think friendship is not built on one-sided intention but mutual compatibility. If you pretend to be nice and try to befriend someone simply because they are rich, famous or well-educated, sooner or later, it's going to fall apart. You can't expect to be best friend with somebody, simply because you focus your time and energy unilaterally. It's kind of like courtship; people don't give-in and say 'yes', simply because you are 'presistent'... You can still be friends, but I don't think you can advance the level of closeness if the other party is not willing to take the next step.
