Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere is set to follow in the footsteps of Theo Walcott and secure a shock place in Fabio Capello’s squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer.
Capello has been hugely impressed by the 17-year-old midfielder and feels he can stake a real claim for inclusion if he can secure regular first-team football at the Emirates.
Capello said: “Jack Wilshere has surprised me, he has improved a lot now. He has a big personality.
“He is good with the ball, he plays without fear and with growing confidence.
“We have time to look at him and months to decide if we go to South Africa. It will depend a lot on whether he plays for Arsenal.
“He’s in the squad for the Under-20s and will go with them to Egypt in the World Championships and that will be very important.”
While Wilshere looks to stake an unlikely claim for a place in the squad, Michael Owen hopes his move to Manchester United will convince Capello to select him for the first time during his reign.
The 29-year-old striker has failed to make the squad for the friendly against Holland but Capello has refused to shut the door on him completely.
Capello added: “It’s a fantastic chance for Owen to play for a really important team. The door is always open for players. I followed him last week and he played a good game against Valencia. He has to play well and score goals. No more.”
One player who insisted on joining the squad for the Holland game is David Beckham, despite running the risk of further unrest at LA Galaxy.
Capello said: “It’s a long flight but we know he wants to come so we decided to include him.”
