作者: kenzo1111    時間: 2006-8-21 02:03

Lynch Bage 97 should be very open and direct now. Since 97 is not a very successful vantigae, don't expect it can compare with 00 even 95 or 96,  however, the price is very reasonable and ready to drink.
I personally will suggest 97 or  99 for immediate drinking.

enjoy it.

ha, i am not tall at all and only have 178cm tall...
for the wine around $100....
my choice is all in Park'n shop
Montgras, Los Vasco when on sale...from 138 to $88
Also, the from wine called "Alguilhe" its second wine sale from 149 to $99. only available in superstore. MUST BUY!!!
Also, the Chilean wine called Sunrise, its Cab Sau is the recommendation for 250 wine available in Asia, the best one in the low price category.
Read this Book and available in bookstore even library.
In Watson's wine cellar, i think Aust, Paringa is one of the best buy for daily drinking.  It is not easy to find good French wine under $100 ga la.  Southern France such as Cote de Rhone may have some good stuff.
try an error la.

Well.. Declare the conflict of Interest first   .... I am the importer of Greek Wines

But honest speaking.  I personally love Greek Wines more becuase of Aroma, lasting, smooth &  PRICE ...of course

May be I wouldnt want to spend more on the French Wine which I think the price is not worth with the quality.   Besides
Greek,  I would suggest Italy, Portugal & Australia which are quite good with reasonable price.   (depands on which brand)

I realise that most of the people only interested in French wine of course with certain reasons

normally I wouldnt spend more than $200/bottle unless in certain events.

Can tell me by average how many bottle will spend per week ?

Hi Kenzo, I like white wine.
What do you suggest for price lower than $500?
I prefer something from Chile or Australia.
作者: kenzo1111    時間: 2006-11-12 23:48

Lower than $500?
Chile or Australia  white wine can be very pleasant even if u pay only under 200.
For gal, i like German resling kabinet or Spatlase. Around 200 to 300, very good and pleasant. Very charming.

Also, any Gurwerstraminer can be good too. Best from south france such as
ALsace.

I also like New Zealand Sauvignon blanc. Clouldy Bay or Osyter Bay are good choice.

For Austrilian wine, choose Western Austrilian, Voctoria, Claire Valley wine.

I personally have less idea about Chilean white. sorry

To get a glass, it all depends if Brother Kenzo1111 has done his due diligence.

How many we taste?  We drink up to the limit but not to get drunk.  It must have been over 20.

作者: kenzo1111    時間: 2006-11-17 00:50

u need a basic wine course woh.
haha, come out and let me teach u.
Buy a book for new drinker or goto library to borrow one.
Need to know the main wine type, red, white, champaigne, dessert wine...
then how to desribe the taste,
First of all, know the grape types.
Then, know the taste of the main grapes. Cabinet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz,
pinot noir, melbec,....
For the white: chadonnay, sauvignon blanc, riesling, semillon, gwerustaminer, pinot gris....
then know the countries
Old world{ French, Italian, Spanish. German.....
New world{ US, Aussie, Chilean, NZ, Argentina,
then draw into details into France, Italian, Aussie, US...as u like.
need to know what is champaigne.
SO complicated, rite?
ANyway, drink more and  u will know more...no need to be too theoretical.
Interested to join our gathering?

for most new world wine, I think vintage is not that important as they irrigation and other "man-made" action are allowed while growing the grape
rather the brand / vineyard is much more important

You guys went to the watson's tasting together ? I was there too. What do you guys like.

I tasted an old bottle of burgundy at the corner of the hall.  Quite good.  And then there was the large format of an Australian wine (Peter Lehmann maybe), very different from regular sized bottle.  The most interesting one is the 1993 white from France.  Taste of dry rasin.

U can try wine buff in wanchai.  They hosted a Leeuwin dinner about 2 months ago and they offers art series chardonnay for 03 vintage at less than 600 per bottle.  But I will caution you that new vintage of Leeuwin is not always in its best form.  01 vintage is just beginning to show its wealth and 03 vintage may take even longer to mature.  If you plan to buy and open, then I do not recommend Leeuwin.  There are plenty of them out there at lower price can deliver the same joy today.  Of course if you plan to store it for at least 5 years, Leeuwin art series chardonnay is the choice.

Hi! it's nice to read this thread! It's good place to share!

I'm a wine lover, but I'm only a beginner, hope bros won't mind. I'm not rich, the price range I've tried is HKD 50-1900 - the cheapest one is 1996 長城干紅 Cab Sau., the $1900 is a 1989 Lynch Bages. And I always drink alone, a.k.a less varieties I've tried.

I'd like to share 2 very interesting experience just happened recently: I had a bottle of Las Vacos Reserve 1998 with 打邊爐, at the beginning it's nothing special, but during the middle of the meal, I found the "pairing" is so wonderful! I found out it's the Las Vacos Reserve and the 辣椒豉油, they just match so good!

Anothe experience is Penfold St. Henri Shiraz 2001 with 大排檔 黑椒羊鞍煲, I like Shiraz with 羊腩 for long time, but this time, the Shiraz with 羊鞍煲 is just exceed my expectation. Worth a try.

BTW, I'll have 避風塘炒蟹 with friends a few days later, I'm thinking of pair it with a sparkling wine - light to medium bodied, well balance of 甜酸度, I haven't tried this before, is it a good idea? Any recommendation?

95正!
I liked Lynch Bages, too, it's an all time favourite when dinning with biz friends, vintage I've tried: 89, 94, 96, 97, 99, 2000, they're very consistant and 96' 00' are outstanding, but too bad they're becoming over-priced now, 五級酒莊, 2級價錢! then I switched to Montrose, Les Fort du Latour.

all u list are good for oyster. For Chablis, buy the grand Cru with little more money.
Don't forget Sancere and Muscadet Ser lie.
More suggestion : Gewruztraminer for Thai or Vietman food.

DeeTsang is higher ranked than most of us.  A master!

Penfold St Henri's 2002 has got 95 pts by James Holliday. watch it!

For mutton, southern france is a good choice such as Cheateauneuf de Pape and Cote de Rhone Village.

want to check on Amour de Deutz Champagne, Millesime 1999 Blanc de Blancs.  Any good?
anyone tried that before?
作者: tailawyau    時間: 2006-11-30 17:57

ha, i wasted a bottle of Troplong Mondot 96 last time, she still has a long way to go, i opened too early

personally, using grand cru chablis with oyster is not my favourite as the 腥味 of oyster will become much stronger, i prefer using Muscadet Ser lie, the additional favour from the lees just make the wine very enjoyable

Thanks Parklane, can you suggest some good Chardonnay for short and medium term drinking? I like the more elegant and complex burgundy style.

Columbia crest Grande Estate Chardonnay.
Very good in Dry Washington area. Burgundy like.

Because good Burgundy is very expansive and unstable. I find that it's quite difficult to find good Burgundy less than $600! Some good Domains (like Leory) charge more than $800 for their entry level wine.

Tai gor,
Columbia Crest grande estate chardonnay is only about 150 and even 120 on ssales in Watson's. It is always the top 50 of Wine Spectator.
Everybody knows Merseult or Montrachet is good ar....money money money..

Bannockburn chardonnay and Bass Phillip are very reliable choice but some bottle age is necessary.  New wine, even white wine, need air.  I will normally open it and leave it there for at least half an hour so that the sulflur, CO2 will blow away and the wine will taste much better.  Both of them are at the range of 300-400.  Another one I like very much is Ashbrook.  It is also an Australian wine.  I bought a case of 2001 last year during sale and the price is less than 200 (from Boutique Wine in Southern Horizon).  If you like creamy, heavy wood, buttery style, Clauraut (you can find in Watson) is OK and it is ready to drink even for newer vintage.  This wine is a little bit too easy to drink and too obvious which lose the elegance aspect but nevertheless will please many people.

Bordeaux is becoming too expensive now.  You just wont find any classified growth below 500 that you would eager to buy nowaday. And I observed a very very interesting phenomenon last week.  I was in a wine tasting on Friday where it featured Aussie, California, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Italy and Rhone.  The first counter that run out of wine is Burgundy, even the Bourgonge was gone.  People are not too keen on Bordeaux.  By the time I left, there are still bottles of Bordeaux there remained unopened (they are classified growth by the way).  I think peoples palate has changed now.

Thanks for kenzo1111 and Parklane's suggestion.
I also want to ask for the storage of wine,  I have some white wine that stored in my office where temperature always keeps between 22-25 C but I find that many of the white loss their charming after 2 years, they are not especially bad but just has a feeling of flattened and a bit sour. I also find that most red Bordeaux stored in wine cellar developed a lot of sediment after 1-2 years of storage but the wines stored in my office has almost no sediment even they are the same wine as in my cellar, that's quite strange as I thought that higher temperature should cause the wine mature faster though they could be rough. Now I think that different temperature may force the wine to develope in different way, not only speed of maturity! how do you think?
作者: parklane    時間: 2006-12-5 09:10

white wine is very sensitive to heat and 22-25 degree will definitely force the wine to mature very quickly or even loss the flavour.  If you do not have a cellar, better store it in the refrigerator or drink up fast, dun stock it up.
Many red wine right now are unfiltered so it is natural to flow sentiment.  But if you find wine lost sentiment in hot environment, I have never experienced this.  I suspect it may be due to bottle variation.  When the wine are being extracted from the 255 liter barrel, some may carry the sentiment and some may not.  You may also find that wine may be lighter than another bottle of the same wine because of this.

i had experience of two bottles of Chapoutier le Meal in the dinner
the 1st was excellent while the 2nd one was totally flat and showed nothing
and since then I seldom store white in my home unless i have a definite date of drinking

I prefer RWT rather than St Henri, of course the price has a large gap between them. So I will try Saltram Bin No 1 Shiraz, the price is a little bit cheaper than St Henri, but the quality is marvellous!

Rhone wines are good in general but their style is quite different from Aussie. They are so elegant & stylish.

Burgundy wines are very good only to those high-priced i.e. over $500. Their style is very different from Bordeaux wines. I don't know what burgundy wines they opened. However, Burgundy wines seems not the main theme in HK. Recently, I love Burgundy wines.

Congratulation!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! (a little bit late ...=D)
The wine is fruity, silky & have a good body. However, it might have some earthy smell which you may not like it. The price is reasonable. I don't think it's expensive. It's value for money.
Enjoy your wine! =DDD
作者: tailawyau    時間: 2007-1-2 12:46

Chateau DE FONBEL is just a "so-so" wine selling at about 200 something in Watson's, not really outstanding one

The classification system in St Emilion is quite different from Bordeaux, the real good ones are Premiers Grands Crus Classes A & B, like Ausone, Cheval Blanc, etc.  Grand Gru label in the area means nothing

next time, if you wish to check the prices, you can use this search engine:
