1) New year major sell off because of deferred tax issues (this probably takes place in US, not sure in Asia markets)

2) Slow down of US economy (the slow down is a lot worst than expected).  The main driver would be the bad housing market which is already bad enough.

3) Fourth Quarter (annual) earnings are out beat estimates, but market don't expect companies could continue high growth rates.  This factor probably takes place in Feb and March

4) Sudden jump of gold price, but I couldn't think of a reason why at the moment.

That doesn't happens with the 大 戶.  In fact, they don't need to sell the actual stock, they could write calls or trade OTC markets to flat their positions.
