The team must now confront a series of threats to the modern world as creature invasions through the anomalies become more frequent. While Cutter seeks an answer to the riddle of what prompts them and why they are growing worse, he also must deal with his wife's enigmatic reappearance. Slowly and reluctantly, he begins to believe that Helen holds the key to at least part of the mystery.
The next crisis is an infestation of poisonous spiders deep in the London Underground. Not ordinary poisonous spiders, but Megarachne, a kind of ancient scorpion from the carboniferous era, up to 90 cms long. Then Connor is dropped him from the team for embarking on a freelance mission in pursuit of a supposed velociraptor, and Stephen is bitten by a lethal three-metre-long ancestor of the millipede. Lost in the Underground tunnels, Cutter again finds Helen, and again she slips away from him, but manages to tell the dying Stephen that she will wait for her husband on the other side of the anomaly. But will Stephen survive to relay the message?
