This 'unqualified Apothecary' was a Mr. A. Botelho, whose duties also included those of the Government Analyst, although Dr Ayres omitted to mention them.
After the retirement of Botelho in 1879 following a government career that had started in 1849, Mr. H. McCallum was appointed as the first properly qualified Government Apothecary and Analyst, taking up his post in November of that year. However in his first report in 1881, he lamented that on his arrival he 'found there was no laboratory and scarcely any apparatus, appliances and chemicals'. He indented for such articles but on their arrival in May 1880 there being 'no adequate laboratory'
, he found difficulty in storing them.
In July 1880, he was given a room for a laboratory in the new extension of the Lock Hospital, the temporary buildings of the Government Civil Hospital having burnt down the previous year. These buildings were situated on the sites of the modern day Tsan Yuk Hospital and Prince Philip Dental Hospital, Hospital Road, Western.
