Thanks for the advice.

I thought one is 98 Octane and the cheaper one is 95 or something lower than 98.  So what's the difference between the two, other than the price?  

Would the fuel tank rust while the car itself is like new?  When I bought it, the car was really well looked after.  The previous owner lives in Tregunter and with only 31K in 5 1/2 years, one would assume this is the car for the maid to go to the markets.

Can the fuel tank possibly be drained and cleaned thoroughly?

The fuel tank can drained and clean easily. For safety reason, it is better do it by your mechanic.

It can be rusted if it was not used for 1 or 2 years. I don't think a S-type is used for maid's shopping even in mid-level. I suspect it is a car brought for the wife but she do not enjoy driving or traveling in Hong Kong. Especially, this size of cars is not friendly to a short chinese lady. And many people do not like to hire a driver because of privacy. So the S-type is stationed for a long time and sold. The appearance of the car is protected by paint but the tank is just steel. (there is some trucks with plastic tanks)

Better talk to your mechanic, gas station should equipped primary petrol filter. So the dirt should be inside the tank already.

From the service record, the car had been used regularly and at 6,000 Km p.a., it's not unreasonable.

The car, since the last service, has been running smoothly, except for the occasional jerk whcih I don't like.  Hope it was my imagination.

It is possible that the petrol station using broken filters and contaminated fuel. I heard that kind of story too. Although it is not likely to happen, try changing gas filling station. And see whether it is improved.
I have not use ESSO in my life.

S-type indeed is not a bad car. It is a symbol of success, tradition but not compromise. 2008 model is comming and look young too.

For the 2008 model, I think I need to wait until 2013 or beyond to be able to afford the used car.  I'll settle for the time being, the facelift model of 2003 2.5L.

I use Esso simply because it has the best deal among all three oil companies.
