hi all

didn't know a new thread here
will come and check regularly

how about parklane and deju, where are they???
Hi all,
I am here.

You guys went to the watson's tasting together ? I was there too. What do you guys like.

I tasted an old bottle of burgundy at the corner of the hall.  Quite good.  And then there was the large format of an Australian wine (Peter Lehmann maybe), very different from regular sized bottle.  The most interesting one is the 1993 white from France.  Taste of dry rasin.

friends, where can I find Leeuwin's Chardonnay in HK? I know that Rare and Fine Wine has it, any other place of reasonable price? Thanks.
U can try wine buff in wanchai.  They hosted a Leeuwin dinner about 2 months ago and they offers art series chardonnay for 03 vintage at less than 600 per bottle.  But I will caution you that new vintage of Leeuwin is not always in its best form.  01 vintage is just beginning to show its wealth and 03 vintage may take even longer to mature.  If you plan to buy and open, then I do not recommend Leeuwin.  There are plenty of them out there at lower price can deliver the same joy today.  Of course if you plan to store it for at least 5 years, Leeuwin art series chardonnay is the choice.

Long time no see ar.  Welcome back.

I like the German Ice wine most.  And the Peter Lehman too - from the 6 litre bottle of course.
Thank you.  I planned to try the dry white first, then pinot, then red, then German white but by the time I went to German corner, everything is gone.  What a pity.

Anyone recall the 1993 white from France with a very special taste.  It is next to Delas Freres counter.  I didnt jot down the brand but I quite like it.

Yes it is the 1985 clos vouguet but it is only of average quality.  Of course, magnum of Delas Feres, I recall it to be Les Bressade 1999.  Very nice wine.  There is one more wine show this Saturday organised by winenow in Happy Valley, anyone going.

hi parklane

where is wine buff??  the one opposite to Hopewell Centre?
Yes it is a small shop opposite to the temple around Hopewell Center.  There is nothing much you can window shop there.  Better leave your name and email to them and they will send you the list of new stock every month by email.

Thanks Parklane, can you suggest some good Chardonnay for short and medium term drinking? I like the more elegant and complex burgundy style.
Bannockburn chardonnay and Bass Phillip are very reliable choice but some bottle age is necessary.  New wine, even white wine, need air.  I will normally open it and leave it there for at least half an hour so that the sulflur, CO2 will blow away and the wine will taste much better.  Both of them are at the range of 300-400.  Another one I like very much is Ashbrook.  It is also an Australian wine.  I bought a case of 2001 last year during sale and the price is less than 200 (from Boutique Wine in Southern Horizon).  If you like creamy, heavy wood, buttery style, Clauraut (you can find in Watson) is OK and it is ready to drink even for newer vintage.  This wine is a little bit too easy to drink and too obvious which lose the elegance aspect but nevertheless will please many people.

I liked Lynch Bages, too, it's an all time favourite when dinning with biz friends, vintage I've tried: 89, 94, 96, 97, 99, 2000, they're very consistant and 96' 00' are outstanding, but too ba ...
Bordeaux is becoming too expensive now.  You just wont find any classified growth below 500 that you would eager to buy nowaday. And I observed a very very interesting phenomenon last week.  I was in a wine tasting on Friday where it featured Aussie, California, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Italy and Rhone.  The first counter that run out of wine is Burgundy, even the Bourgonge was gone.  People are not too keen on Bordeaux.  By the time I left, there are still bottles of Bordeaux there remained unopened (they are classified growth by the way).  I think peoples palate has changed now.

white wine is very sensitive to heat and 22-25 degree will definitely force the wine to mature very quickly or even loss the flavour.  If you do not have a cellar, better store it in the refrigerator or drink up fast, dun stock it up.
Many red wine right now are unfiltered so it is natural to flow sentiment.  But if you find wine lost sentiment in hot environment, I have never experienced this.  I suspect it may be due to bottle variation.  When the wine are being extracted from the 255 liter barrel, some may carry the sentiment and some may not.  You may also find that wine may be lighter than another bottle of the same wine because of this.

I want to ask those Burgundy experts about Domain Leroy, I know that the white head is Negociant wine and I want to know whether the red head is much better than the white head as it's usually at l ...
The red head are domaine produced wine which means the vineyard is owned by Leroy whereas the white cap is made from purchased grapes.  Usually red cap represents the flagship of a domaine so it is supposed to be of better quality.  Of course, Leroy is the 1st growth equilvalent of Bordeaux and the red cap is without doubt excellent.  As far as I can remember, Leroy owns grand cru and premium cru vineyard and the red cap produced are very rare and expensive.  I dun recall any overlapping of same vineyard with both white and red cap produced.

no idea about the course organized by open U. Judging from the name of the course, it is for fun more than being serious.  So it all depends whether you want to take a course for your future career or just to know about wine in a guided way.  If it is for your career, people normally take the WSET course which is for hotel and wine trade.  It is serious and you need to study.  I have an overseas link but it may not be most updated;
http://www.phillywine.com/wset.html#tuesdaydiplomaschedule
But if you are not that serious and not for career purpose, best way perhaps is to buy and drink systematically, I am sure people in wine shop will be more than happy to help you and guide you.  Books are also useful, the wine buyer's guide from Robert Parker will be very comprehensive.  I guarantee you if you read the book cover to cover, you know wine better than many of the people in the wine trade

I think they have course run in HK.  Perhaps do a search on WSET and see if there is anything there.

Big brother...any recommandation for the "Merlot"? Below HKD 300 is ok for me...
Check this link:
http://www.ponti-fwc.com/index.a ... chresult&Page=2

The Shafer Merlot is quite good but over your budget.  Otherwise the Duckhorn merlot on page 2 should be fine too.

If you accept mixed grapes with primarily merlot, right bank bordeaux will give you more choice.

Master Parklane has come back!!!

Some 2003 Bordeaux have been marketed. i have a bottle d Guaurd Larose second 2003 from Watson's but not yet tried. only 299.
Please please please, do not call me Master.  I am just one of the many many wine lovers here.

Yes 2003 is in the market now and many of them are very tasty even at such young stage.  I tried a lot of them and in particular I like the following:

Potent Canet
Pavillon 2nd of margaux
Lascombe
Gurard Larose
Branaire Ducru
Leoville Poyferre
Lagona Barton
La fort de latour
latour
Caurade de lafite

and of course, there are some disappointments.
The current market sentiment is tax reduction so you will see some of the 2003 released from Waston are at very good price but I doubt how long would it last.  I suspect in about 3 months time when the tax reduction news is fully digested, the price will go up and up again.  So I do suggest anyone like 2003 bordeaux to stock up now.  Many of the price is just 100-200 above the cost at En primeur

here is another beautiful aus. wine  greenock's creek apricot block shriaz. hope everybody like it.
If you can find older Greennock Creek wine (before 1998 vintage), they are fabulous drinking now.  Current vintage will need more time.  Also, their wine maker changed since 1998 and I quite like the previous style.

Have you consumed your Roennfeldt Road - the bottle we bartered?  If I remember correctly, it was 1997.  I have one bottle and don't know when to open.
No I haven't, I want to give it more bottle age.  Indeed, i find when you open a young Aus Shriaz, many of them are so similar and the baby fat just masked the true face of the wine.  The same comment will apply to many of them, like volatile, alochol, heat and obviouslu tannic.  I do believe giving an outstanding wine sufficient bottle age will be rewarded.  About a month ago, I opened a bottle of Lagrange ( ST jULIEN) 90.  I didn't like the wine back in 2000 but now the wine is so beautiful.

For the RR, I will cellar it for at least another 15 years and I will post my note then.  Stay tuned.

Yes, next to Tom Li Piano.  It is not on the groundlevel but upstair.
What they told me is Haier bought the production line from a German brand years ago so the core of it is designed elsewhere.  I have one and so far it is OK and I will tell the same story why I bought in the first place.  I walked into the showroom in Wanchai, saw the owner stored Petrus, Lafite etc in the Haier cellar and I think if he feel comfortable with it, why shouldn't I.  Price is only one third of famous brand.  The only prblem I have with them is the appearance.  It looks ugly if you put it in your dining room.  But if you put it in the kitchen, it is OK.

Another choice I would recommend is a shop in the Admiralty Center.  They carried Liebraumn (not sure about the spelling).  Very presentable and durable.  I've been using it for many years now.  Quite expensive, around 16,000-18000 for 100 bottles storeage.  Many of my friends bought it already and so far no one complaint.

Torbreck is available in Berry Brothers.  They have a shop in Lee Garden, CWB.  Whatever Torbreck wine you want, you can buy by cases there including woodcutter, struie, factor, decendent, runrig.  Woodcutter is the best value and struie will be well-liked by everyone.

John Duval, previous winemaker of Penfold created his own brand using his own name.  You can find his wine in City Super (IFC) which I think is even better than Penfold.  At least it is an alternative.  I feel bored drinking same wine everyday.

Price for premium bordeaux wine is ultra expensive in Watson.  Not too long ago, I saw a bottle of 99 Tertre Roteboeuf priced at 4000+ and the same bottle is selling less than 1000 elsewhere.  What I think Watson is good for being the wide variety of wine avaialble at 150-450 price range.  Happy hunting

Their web site is www.boutiquewines.com.hk
Lately they shipped in some serious champaign they is very hard to get not just in HK.

just come back from Shanghai.  Wine are so expensive there.  I went into 2 retail shops, one has more champaign and one has more Australian wine but the price is 20-40% higher than HK.  They do have older vintage of Austalian wine such as 01 Leeuwin art series chardonnay meaning they are not selling well.
Bought a bottle of King George V Blue Label at airport.  Very expensive but best Whisky I even had
