In 2005 SHOT Show, the Switzerland based SIG branch in US, SIGARMS has released a new caliber 5.56mm rifle, model 556.

It is basically an enhanced version of the reliable (and expensive) 550/551 rifle series, with the improved features like:-

1) Using Aluminium alloy receiver to replace steel, in order to reduce the weight.
2) Using 6-position retractable stock to replace the 550/551 type folding stock.
3) Able to use it's own magazine or the American M16/AR15 type rifle magazine.
4) Has a Picatinny railed receiver and a tactical quad rail for attaching sights and accessories.
5) The rifle is completely made in USA, to cut down the cost which make the selling price more competitive to the American AR15 series rifle, and most important, as the model 556 is manufactured in US, it would cause any import restriction of obtaining a Swiss made weapon.

為應付未來需要，美國於2003年初決定公開招標開發新一代突擊步槍以供轄下特種部隊成員使用。

經過一輪測試及淘汰後，美軍特種作戰司令部 USSOCOM (US Special Operations Command) 終於係2004年正式決定採用由比利時 FN 廠生產o既 SCAR 5.56mm/7.62mm 步槍黎取代 M16A2 同 M4 供應特種部隊使用，美軍軍方編號為 Mark 16（口徑 5.56X45mm NATO），同 Mark 17（口徑7.62X51mm NATO）。

據講 FN 廠將來會生產能夠發射俄式 7.62X39mm 子彈o既 Mark 17，令特種部隊就算到敵對國家內執行任務時候亦無須擔心彈藥補給問題。

其實經過近年阿富汗同伊拉克經實戰證實現用o既 M885 5.56X45mm NATO 子彈雖然穿透力比越戰時期o既 M193 5.56mm 子彈好，但阻進力 stopping power 就比唔上（擊中人體時候所做成o既破壞力），每每對付宗教狂熱份子時候需要發射多槍先能夠將敵人擊倒，所以美國國內已經有人希望可以用7.62X51mm NATO 彈，或者係新近研製o既 6.8mm SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge)  子彈取代 5.56mm。

同樣情況，美軍亦發現 Beretta M9 手槍 9mm 子彈 stopping power 不足，好多特種部隊經已再重新使用 M1911A1 .45ACP 大口徑手槍。
